College of the Atlantic is pleased to offer a new summer Spanish Intensive in the Yucatan. Current COA students and visiting students from other institutions are welcome to participate. The program is three COA credits (10 semester credits).

Intensive Spanish Immersion Program: Summer in the Yucatan

Program Dates:
July 1–August 29, 2014 (10 weeks)

This ten-week course is intended to provide students with an immersion experience in the language and culture of Spanish speakers in the Yucatan Peninsula during the summer season. The objectives are to increase their abilities to navigate the linguistic and cultural terrain of another society in sensitive, ethical, and effective ways. Immersion experiences, living with a family and intensive field work, will provide a primary source of experiential learning. Specifically the program will include a brief orientation around the peninsula followed by three weeks of language classes in the capital city of Mérida. The next three weeks will consist of archaeology and anthropology courses taught in rural communities. Finally, the students will complete an independent project in a location that they choose.

Throughout the entirety of the program, students will live and learn with local families. Students will become familiar with ethnographic research techniques as well as the dynamics of daily life in different communities; the city, a fishing village and a town dedicated to traditional agriculture. Evaluation will be based both on classwork and the quality and depth of the final project. A final reflective paper written in Spanish will also be evaluated. Permission of instructor required. Students must possess an intermediate level of Spanish to be eligible to apply. Attendance at orientation is required from June 24–30. Language ability will be assessed through a diagnostic exam and interview. Level: Intermediate/Advanced. The class carries 3 COA credits (10 semester credits).
