Areas of Study

Unlike most colleges, College of the Atlantic has no academic departments—a decision made in the early 1970s by the founders of the college. As the college has grown, the faculty has continued to maintain the nondepartmental focus—a focus that fosters not only interdisciplinary teaching and research but also cross-disciplinary dialogue. For organizational purposes, however, COA divides its curriculum into three resource areas:

»Arts and Design

»Environmental Sciences

»Human Studies

At COA, students have the freedom to design a program of study that will allow them to explore their interests, pursue their passions and discover new ones, and attain their overall academic and career goals. Some possible areas of specialization include:

»Arts & Design

»Field Ecology and Conservation Biology

»Educational Studies

»Ecological Policy and Planning

»International Studies

»Literature and Writing

»Marine Studies

»Sustainable Business

»Sustainable Food Systems
