Inspired by Nature

Inspired by Nature: Discovering Drawing and Painting

SYLLABUS

This two- week course will focus on the never-ending source of inspiration nature provides for us as we record what we see in a variety of mediums and styles, from tiny details on a butterfly wing to the essence of a craggy ocean shoreline.  There will be an emphasis on observation, drawing skills (week one), and outdoor painting skills, (week two).   Whether you are looking for ways to incorporate art as a learning tool in the classroom, or wanting to improve your own artistic skills, this class will provide a wide range of experiences featuring indoor studio work and plein-air quick-capture techniques in the field.

Each week will begin with basic foundation instruction with rapidly escalating challenges that can be adjusted for individual experience levels.  Choices, flexible goals, and working with a variety of subjects in a variety of settings will allow students to customize their experience.  We will take advantage of the fantastic resources offered by Acadia National Park, the COA campus, nearby Thuya Gardens and the research vessel Osprey, (weather permitting).  We will look to historical examples of scientists, artists, explorers and naturalists for inspiration as we draw and paint our way through the two-week adventure.  Students will be provided with a flexible list of materials to bring, and some supplies will be provided.  Classes will meet from 8:30 to 4:30, Monday – Friday.
