Jordan Motzkin '10 of Larchmont, New York, had been at College of the Atlantic for just a few weeks this September when he heard that the Sustainability Institute was looking for nominees for their first Sustainability Innovator Award. He joined with Matthew Maiorana of Detroit, Michigan, and COA's sustainability director, Craig Ten Broeck, to nominate the college for the award.
Says Motzkin, "When I was looking to change schools, I was looking to find a college that approached environmental issues from a holistic perspective, staying current with changes that were happening. COA was the best out there - and I exhausted myself with research.
"COA by nature is an innovative school. Sustainability is at the core of what we do - I don't know who else would get the award."
The institute, which is supported by the Rockefeller Brothers Fund, V. Kann Rasmussen Foundation and the Nathan Cummings Foundation, looks at the sustainability impact of colleges and universities in the United States and Canada with the 200 largest endowments. This year, the institute also decided to recognize sustainability innovators among schools with smaller endowments.
