Class of 2013

College of the Atlantic is for imaginative, idealistic, and intellectually curious people who want to make a difference in the world — people who will appreciate COA's unique community and enlarge it with their thoughts, opinions, and spirit.

As you explore this website you'll get a sense of what sets COA apart:

Self-directed: At COA each student designs his or her own course of study in human ecology. You are in charge of your education, and you're encouraged to chart your educational journey based on your goals and passions.

Interdisciplinary problem solving: Your studies will bring together perspectives from multiple disciplines to address issues facing our world. In a marine ecology class you may find yourself discussing politics, history, or the culture of the fishing industry; or perhaps you'll use art, international law, and land use planning to explore the impacts of global climate change.

Hands-on, minds-on: Academics are rigorous, with an approach to learning where you'll not only think, read, and write, but also create, act, and do. Your studies will take you from classroom, studio, and laboratory to field, island, and community. You'll push yourself, expand your thinking, and explore new paradigms.

Purpose driven: Students and faculty come to COA because they see things that need to change and they want to make a difference.
